Ron George originally designed and created Power BI in 2010 under the name “Project Crescent.” In September 2013, Microsoft changed its name to Power BI and released it to the public. In addition, Microsoft added advanced features like natural language questions and answers, enterprise-level data security and connectivity, and Power data gateways to later versions.
Bring your data to life! “simple promise: “five seconds to sign up, five minutes to wow!” ― Edward Price.
As of July 24th, 2015, Power BI became available to the general public. According to the 2019 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Analytics and Business Intelligence Platform, Power BI has been ranked among the top BI tools. Additionally, there were add-ins for Microsoft Excel, Power Pivot, Power View, and Power Query in this release of Power BI for Office 365.
Power BI Definition:
A Microsoft service, Power BI offers business intelligence and analysis service in the cloud. This toolkit includes software services, mobile apps, and data connectors for business intelligence and data visualization. Making shareable reports, dashboards, and applications with the datasets imported in Power BI will allow you to visualize and analyze the data.
With Power BI, users have access to drag-and-drop features and self-service capabilities. Power BI offers three platforms: Power BI Desktop, Power BI Service, and Power BI Mobile. Moreover, Power BI can be deployed both on-premises and in the cloud.
Features of Power BI:
Several kinds of services are covered under Power BI. Views and dashboards can be shared via a cloud-based BI service called Power BI Services. Reports can be created using Power BI Desktop. In addition, Power BI Embedded runs on the Azure cloud platform and can create reports, perform data analysis and carry out ETL operations.
Let us discuss Power BI features and why you should need them.
Appealing Visuals:
With Power BI, you can create detailed and attractive visualizations of your data. Therefore, their visual representation plays a crucial role in Power BI. Dashboards. Reports can be created by choosing simple or complex visualizations depending on how you represent the data. Custom visualizations can also be made using the library.
Filtered Data:
Creating a dataset involves gathering data from multiple sources and combining them into a single set. These datasets can be used to create different kinds of visualizations. For example, an Excel workbook can be the only data source or contain data taken from multiple sources.
By filtering the datasets, you can have smaller subsets containing only relevant data. Azure, Facebook, Excel, Oracle, and Salesforce are just a few examples of data sources that Power BI provides users with the ability to connect to. By linking to these data sources, users can easily create datasets by importing data from various sources.
Personalized Dashboards:
A dashboard is a collection of visualizations providing meaningful insights into data. Dashboards can be shared and printed. A navigation pane is included in the application. Users can navigate between data sets, dashboards, and reports easily in Power BI.
In Power BI, a tile is a single block containing a visualization. To provide a clearer view, tiles separate each informative visualization properly. The size of these tiles can also be adjusted. Users may also place them anywhere on the dashboard according to their convenience.
Detailed Reports:
In Power BI, reports consist of multiple dashboards displaying various types of information about a specific business topic. Accounts provide a complete and structured presentation of data expressed in different ways and reveal essential data insights. In addition, power BI users can easily share reports with other users.
Q & A Box and Helpline
Natural Language Q&A is an exclusive feature of Power BI. A user can ask a question to find data and information in the Power BI system using the Q&A box. For example, when a user searches for a specific visualization or part of a report, the Power BI cognitive engines will search for it and return it to the user.
Users can use cognitive technology to fulfill their search requirements through rephrasing, auto-filling, suggestions, and similar methods. In addition, multiple settings are available via the help and feedback buttons, including downloading, requesting assistance, giving feedback to the Power BI support team, etc.
Advantages of Power BI:
Real-time Analysis:
Direct connections to data sources can be used in Power BI for real-time analysis. Additionally, it refreshes data every second to ensure the latest information is available. Finally, a custom visualizations gallery allows you to use custom visualizations. There are many types of custom visuals in general.
Accessibility:
Microsoft Excel, SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), and others can be accessed through Power BI. Utilize a secure channel to access data through data gateways by connecting to an on-premises data source such as SQL Server.
Consistent Updates:
Microsoft Power BI is a new generation software that uses HTML5, column stores, cloud computing, and mobile apps. With Power BI’s continuous updating and fresh features, it remains on top and popular.
Data Analysis:
By using the Quick Insights option, you can quickly find meaningful insights and datasets within your data. The combination of on-premises connections and scalable and reliable technology makes Power BI enterprise-ready.
And many more…
To enhance your analytics with Excel’s standard features.
Power BI offers data analysis features like clustering, forecasting, grouping, and quick measures familiar Power Pivot to Excel users well versed in Data Analysis Expressions (DAX) formula language. However, one of Power BI’s more understated benefits is its seamless integration with Microsoft Excel, eliminating the need for users to export files; clicking the ‘Analyze in Excel’ button brings up a user interface almost identical to Excel.
To provides a holistic approach to data governance and security.
The Power BI platform lets users efficiently manage access controls and security, so they don’t need additional tools to ensure compliance. Furthermore, Azure Active Directory (AAD) is also integrated into the service for users’ authentication, allowing you to access your data through Single Sign-On (SSO) in conjunction with your regular Power BI credentials.
To Performance efficiently
As part of Power BI, Data has also been refreshed automatically, ensuring Data is always current and thus improving the end-user experience. In addition, by effectively condensing and loading millions of records, Power BI enables sophisticated data analytics to be performed faster and more efficiently.
To connect the Data effortlessly.
The Power BI platform makes it incredibly easy to bring your data together into one place so that you can better access, organize and visualize your report. Power BI dashboards can be loaded instantly in seconds using these in-built connectors. Alternatively, your data experts can import your datasets and develop your own dashboard and reports by modifying elements further to their liking.
To use R as the data expert.
A core strength of Power BI is its simplicity, but it also satisfies the needs of data experts. This is accomplished by including R, an open-source language consisting of 7,500 packages that data miners and statisticians primarily use. In addition to slicing and drilling down data to show relationships.
